心理學(xué)范疇里使用適應(yīng)概念時(shí)通常有三個(gè)角度,一是生物學(xué)意義上的適應(yīng),即生理適應(yīng),如感官對(duì)聲、光、味等刺激物的適應(yīng);二是心理上的適應(yīng),通常是指遭受挫折后借助心理防御機(jī)制來使人減輕壓力、恢復(fù)平衡的自我調(diào)節(jié)過程,這是一種狹義的適應(yīng)概念;三是對(duì)社會(huì)生活環(huán)境的適應(yīng),包括為了生存而使自己的行為符合社會(huì)要求的適應(yīng)和努力改變環(huán)境以使自己能夠獲得更好發(fā)展的適應(yīng),這是社會(huì)適應(yīng)的概念。

目前解釋適應(yīng)概念比較權(quán)威的定義來自朱智賢主編的《心理學(xué)大辭典》,該詞典中對(duì)適應(yīng)的定義是這樣下的:“適應(yīng)是來源于生物學(xué)的一個(gè)名詞,用來表示能增加有機(jī)體生存機(jī)會(huì)的那些身體上和行為上的改變。心理學(xué)中用來表示對(duì)環(huán)境變化做出的反應(yīng)。如對(duì)光的變化的適應(yīng)和人的社會(huì)行為的變化等。皮亞杰認(rèn)為,智慧的本質(zhì)從生物學(xué)來說是一種適應(yīng),它既可以是一個(gè)過程,也可以是一種狀態(tài)。有機(jī)體是在不斷運(yùn)動(dòng)變化中與環(huán)境取得平衡的,它可以概括為兩種相反相成的作用:同化和順應(yīng)。適應(yīng)狀態(tài)則是這兩種作用之間取得相對(duì)平衡的結(jié)果。這種平衡不是絕對(duì)靜止的,某一個(gè)水平的平衡會(huì)成為另一個(gè)水平的平衡運(yùn)動(dòng)的開始。如果機(jī)體與環(huán)境失去平衡,就需要改變行為以重建平衡。這種平衡――不平衡――平衡……的動(dòng)態(tài)變化過程就是適應(yīng),也是兒童智慧發(fā)展的實(shí)質(zhì)和原因?!?/p>

這一定義至少?gòu)囊韵氯齻€(gè)方面說明了適應(yīng)這一心理現(xiàn)象的性質(zhì)與特點(diǎn):第一,心理適應(yīng)是主體對(duì)環(huán)境變化所做出的一種反應(yīng);第二,心理適應(yīng)是一個(gè)重建平衡的動(dòng)態(tài)變化過程;第三,心理適應(yīng)的內(nèi)部機(jī)制是同化與順應(yīng)的平衡。這三點(diǎn)對(duì)于理解適應(yīng)的概念具有重要的作用。但是,從全面理解適應(yīng)概念的角度看,這一定義中有幾個(gè)要點(diǎn)還需要做出進(jìn)一步的說明:

第一,要明確適應(yīng)現(xiàn)象是伴隨著環(huán)境的變化而出現(xiàn)的,沒有環(huán)境的變化也就無所謂適應(yīng)或不適應(yīng)。但是由于人們生活的環(huán)境(包括自然環(huán)境、心理環(huán)境和社會(huì)環(huán)境)實(shí)際上是處在不間斷的變化中的,因此每個(gè)人每時(shí)每刻都存在著適應(yīng)的問題,都會(huì)產(chǎn)生不斷適應(yīng)新環(huán)境的需要。從這個(gè)意義上說,適應(yīng)是人的一種基本需要,是人的一生中隨時(shí)都要面臨的任務(wù),也是人應(yīng)當(dāng)具備的一種基本素質(zhì)。適應(yīng)能力是個(gè)體生存與發(fā)展的必備能力,對(duì)不同個(gè)體來說,由于適應(yīng)水平不同,最終會(huì)導(dǎo)致其發(fā)展水平上的差異。

第二,心理適應(yīng)的根本目的是達(dá)到或恢復(fù)主客體之間的平衡狀態(tài),這是用平衡論對(duì)心理適應(yīng)本質(zhì)所做的一種解釋。但是,在用平衡論來解釋適應(yīng)本質(zhì)的時(shí)候,還應(yīng)該進(jìn)一步說明平衡與發(fā)展之間的關(guān)系。應(yīng)當(dāng)承認(rèn),平衡是適應(yīng)的直接目標(biāo),適應(yīng)的主要任務(wù)就是使主客體之間的不平衡狀態(tài)重新恢復(fù)平衡。但從個(gè)體發(fā)展的全過程看,平衡只是相對(duì)的,暫時(shí)的,而不平衡則是絕對(duì)的,經(jīng)常的。在個(gè)體發(fā)展過程中,由于一時(shí)的不平衡而引起的內(nèi)部矛盾現(xiàn)象往往正是個(gè)體發(fā)展的動(dòng)力,如果一味地保持平衡,反而會(huì)成為發(fā)展的阻力。因此在指出適應(yīng)的直接目標(biāo)是建立平衡的同時(shí),還應(yīng)該指出適應(yīng)的根本目標(biāo)是主體自身的發(fā)展。這樣才能更好地反映出適應(yīng)的本質(zhì)。這種平衡與不平衡的辯證關(guān)系,反映了心理發(fā)展過程中矛盾運(yùn)動(dòng)的基本規(guī)律,因此也是我們理解適應(yīng)過程的基本理論依據(jù)。

第三,用同化與順應(yīng)來解釋心理適應(yīng)的內(nèi)部機(jī)制可以從一定程度上說明問題,但并不能說明全部問題。定義中所提到的同化與順應(yīng)都是心理調(diào)節(jié)的不同方式。所謂同化是指將客體納入主體已有認(rèn)知結(jié)構(gòu)或行為模式的過程;而順應(yīng)則是指調(diào)整原有認(rèn)知結(jié)構(gòu)或行為模式以適應(yīng)環(huán)境變化的過程。顯然,同化與順應(yīng)都是對(duì)環(huán)境做出反映和對(duì)自身進(jìn)行調(diào)節(jié)的過程。在此應(yīng)強(qiáng)調(diào)指出,同化與順應(yīng)作為認(rèn)知與行為的調(diào)節(jié)過程是受主體的自我意識(shí)支配,借助自我監(jiān)控系統(tǒng)的作用來實(shí)現(xiàn)的。所以心理適應(yīng)實(shí)際上是一個(gè)自我調(diào)節(jié)的過程,在這一過程中,自我意識(shí)的發(fā)展水平起著決定性的作用。

將以上幾點(diǎn)補(bǔ)充進(jìn)心理適應(yīng)的定義后,比較完整的表述應(yīng)當(dāng)是:當(dāng)外部環(huán)境發(fā)生變化時(shí),主體通過自我調(diào)節(jié)系統(tǒng)做出能動(dòng)反應(yīng),使自己的心理活動(dòng)和行為方式更加符合環(huán)境變化和自身發(fā)展的要求,使主體與環(huán)境達(dá)到新的平衡的過程。

二、心理適應(yīng)的類型

關(guān)于適應(yīng)的類型,可以依據(jù)不同的標(biāo)準(zhǔn)將其分為不同的類型。比如孔維民認(rèn)為,根據(jù)適應(yīng)的對(duì)象可以將其分為對(duì)自然環(huán)境的適應(yīng)和對(duì)社會(huì)環(huán)境的適應(yīng);根據(jù)適應(yīng)的基礎(chǔ)可以分為生理適應(yīng)和心理適應(yīng);根據(jù)適應(yīng)的程度可以分為淺層適應(yīng)和深層適應(yīng);根據(jù)適應(yīng)過程中是否有意識(shí)的參與可以分為有意識(shí)的適應(yīng)和無意識(shí)的適應(yīng);根據(jù)適應(yīng)過程中態(tài)度的積極或消極又可分為主動(dòng)適應(yīng)與被動(dòng)適應(yīng)等。[2]這些分類各有自己的依據(jù),都有一定的道理。

除了以上幾種分類外,還可以根據(jù)適應(yīng)的效果分出消極適應(yīng)和積極適應(yīng);根據(jù)適應(yīng)表現(xiàn)的方式分為內(nèi)部適應(yīng)與外部適應(yīng);根據(jù)適應(yīng)的內(nèi)涵分為狹義適應(yīng)和廣義適應(yīng)等。

消極適應(yīng)是個(gè)體改變自己的行為或態(tài)度以適合外部環(huán)境的要求,這是一種基本的、比較被動(dòng)的適應(yīng)方式,其作用只是求得一時(shí)的內(nèi)心平衡;積極適應(yīng)是主體充分發(fā)揮自身的主觀能動(dòng)性,盡最大可能去改變環(huán)境使之適合自己發(fā)展的需要,這是一種比較高級(jí)、比較主動(dòng)的適應(yīng)方式。在個(gè)體發(fā)展過程中,生存與發(fā)展之間存在著十分密切的、相輔相成的關(guān)聯(lián),因此這兩種適應(yīng)方式之間也存在著不可分割的聯(lián)系。事實(shí)上,兩種適應(yīng)對(duì)人都有重要價(jià)值,首先要能夠生存,然后才談得到發(fā)展。生存是發(fā)展的基礎(chǔ),發(fā)展是生存的目的。但從個(gè)體適應(yīng)能力形成的過程看,通常是要先學(xué)會(huì)生存適應(yīng),然后才能達(dá)到發(fā)展適應(yīng)的水平。

心理適應(yīng)與社會(huì)適應(yīng)的關(guān)系十分密切。心理適應(yīng)作為一種綜合性的心理功能,是社會(huì)適應(yīng)的心理基礎(chǔ)。離開以同化、順應(yīng)以及其他一系列復(fù)雜的心理活動(dòng)為基礎(chǔ)的內(nèi)化過程,個(gè)體社會(huì)化的實(shí)現(xiàn)是不可能的。反之,如果脫離開對(duì)社會(huì)環(huán)境的良好適應(yīng),那么心理適應(yīng)本身也就失去了實(shí)際的意義。

三、心理適應(yīng)的內(nèi)部機(jī)制

有人把適應(yīng)過程歸納為需要――阻撓――反應(yīng)――解決問題四個(gè)環(huán)節(jié)。[4]這一觀點(diǎn)的可取之處是從心理動(dòng)力與主客體之間關(guān)系的角度解釋了適應(yīng)過程,不足之處是流于表面,沒有深入到內(nèi)部機(jī)制的層面進(jìn)行分析。

按照皮亞杰的觀點(diǎn),心理適應(yīng)的內(nèi)部機(jī)制就是同化與順應(yīng)的平衡。這是從發(fā)生認(rèn)識(shí)論的角度對(duì)適應(yīng)過程做出的一種解釋。從這一角度出發(fā),可以認(rèn)為心理適應(yīng)就是主體對(duì)外部變化所做出的一系列自我調(diào)節(jié)的過程,其最終目的是重新適應(yīng)新的環(huán)境變化。但是,只用同化和順應(yīng)這兩個(gè)過程來說明適應(yīng)似乎過于簡(jiǎn)單了些。在解釋社會(huì)適應(yīng)中一些復(fù)雜的適應(yīng)過程時(shí)有必要對(duì)此做出進(jìn)一步的說明。結(jié)合認(rèn)知心理學(xué)和社會(huì)心理學(xué)的有關(guān)理論,我們認(rèn)為,心理適應(yīng)的內(nèi)部機(jī)制可表述為以下模式。這一模式表示,從出現(xiàn)不適應(yīng)現(xiàn)象到重新適應(yīng)中間一般要經(jīng)歷認(rèn)知調(diào)節(jié)、態(tài)度轉(zhuǎn)變和行為選擇三個(gè)環(huán)節(jié),其中認(rèn)知調(diào)節(jié)又可分為外部評(píng)估和內(nèi)部評(píng)估兩個(gè)部分。具體運(yùn)行過程以及各環(huán)節(jié)的作用大致如下:

認(rèn)知調(diào)節(jié)是適應(yīng)過程的起始階段,這一環(huán)節(jié)包括外部評(píng)估和內(nèi)部評(píng)估兩部分。

(1)外部評(píng)估

外部評(píng)估是認(rèn)知調(diào)節(jié)的第一階段,指主體對(duì)變化了的外部環(huán)境及其對(duì)自身發(fā)展所具有的影響作用進(jìn)行全面了解并做出新的判斷的過程,主要任務(wù)是確定外部環(huán)境中發(fā)生了哪些新變化,提出了哪些新要求,這些變化和要求對(duì)自身發(fā)展所具有的影響,在此基礎(chǔ)上應(yīng)能對(duì)發(fā)展中遇到的困難做出準(zhǔn)確的判斷,對(duì)新的角色期待形成正確的理解與把握。如果這個(gè)階段中的認(rèn)識(shí)、判斷出現(xiàn)了偏差,就可能產(chǎn)生不適應(yīng)的表現(xiàn)。比如,一個(gè)新升入高一的學(xué)生A面對(duì)學(xué)習(xí)成績(jī)名次下降的新情況,出現(xiàn)了一時(shí)的不平衡即不適應(yīng)的現(xiàn)象。為了重新恢復(fù)平衡,適應(yīng)新環(huán)境,就要正確判斷成績(jī)下降的原因,然后找到有效的對(duì)策。首先要分析的就是客觀的原因,如學(xué)習(xí)任務(wù)、學(xué)習(xí)方法等方面的新特點(diǎn)與新要求,并對(duì)此做出正確、合理的判斷。如果這種了解比較準(zhǔn)確、全面,就為有效調(diào)節(jié)打下了良好的基礎(chǔ)。如果對(duì)新環(huán)境的新特點(diǎn)缺乏全面、客觀的判斷,就會(huì)給適應(yīng)帶來困難。

(2)內(nèi)部評(píng)估

內(nèi)部評(píng)估是指主體在對(duì)外部變化做出正確判斷的基礎(chǔ)上,對(duì)自身內(nèi)部狀態(tài)進(jìn)一步的了解與判斷。實(shí)際上這是一種在自我監(jiān)控系統(tǒng)的參與下,自我評(píng)價(jià)和自我意向重新調(diào)整的過程。具體包括對(duì)因外部變化引起的內(nèi)部不平衡狀態(tài)的估計(jì),對(duì)不適應(yīng)現(xiàn)象的歸因分析,對(duì)已有經(jīng)驗(yàn)的檢索與比較,對(duì)原有行為方式應(yīng)對(duì)效果的審視與判斷等。通常自我評(píng)價(jià)的結(jié)果會(huì)影響到自我體驗(yàn)的改變,如自信心的增強(qiáng)或削弱。同時(shí),自我體驗(yàn)的改變也會(huì)影響到對(duì)行為目標(biāo)的重新選擇,包括對(duì)目標(biāo)價(jià)值及成功概率的重新評(píng)估以及在此基礎(chǔ)上所形成的新的自我期待等。比如,上面那位高一學(xué)生A對(duì)學(xué)習(xí)環(huán)境的新特點(diǎn)與新要求有所了解后,還要進(jìn)一步分析一下內(nèi)部原因,如對(duì)自己原有的經(jīng)驗(yàn)和能力做出一個(gè)估計(jì),判斷自己是否有能力滿足新的要求。如果認(rèn)為名次的下降只是暫時(shí)的,主要原因是一時(shí)的不適應(yīng)或努力不夠,這時(shí)他的自信心不會(huì)受到影響,自我觀念仍然是積極的;但假如認(rèn)為名次下降的原因主要是自己的能力不足,這就會(huì)使自信心水平下降,同時(shí)會(huì)感到緊張和擔(dān)憂。

認(rèn)知過程的變化必然會(huì)引起情緒體驗(yàn)的變化,同時(shí)也會(huì)導(dǎo)致行為意向發(fā)生相應(yīng)的變化。當(dāng)認(rèn)知、情感和行為意向都發(fā)生了變化時(shí),就會(huì)引起態(tài)度的改變。態(tài)度的轉(zhuǎn)變實(shí)際上是對(duì)動(dòng)力系統(tǒng)和反應(yīng)傾向的調(diào)節(jié),這是適應(yīng)新環(huán)境的變化,保持和恢復(fù)心理平衡的一種背景條件。比如,學(xué)生A如果能對(duì)名次下降的原因做出正確解釋,相信自己有能力改變這一現(xiàn)實(shí),他就能繼續(xù)保持對(duì)待學(xué)習(xí)的積極態(tài)度;但如果由于名次下降而開始懷疑自己的實(shí)力,從而導(dǎo)致自信水平下降,產(chǎn)生自卑感和緊張、焦慮感,其結(jié)果就會(huì)使他的學(xué)習(xí)態(tài)度發(fā)生消極的變化,產(chǎn)生厭學(xué)心理。在這一過程中,主體的價(jià)值觀念、對(duì)目標(biāo)的期望水平以及情緒、情感的深刻性,對(duì)態(tài)度的轉(zhuǎn)變具有重要的影響作用。

3、行為選擇

行為選擇實(shí)際上是一個(gè)比較與決策的過程,其核心是對(duì)原有行為方式的調(diào)整與改變。行為方式的重新選擇是以認(rèn)知的調(diào)節(jié)與態(tài)度的改變?yōu)榛A(chǔ)的,受思維方式與態(tài)度傾向的直接制約。思維方式與態(tài)度傾向如果是積極的,那么主體的行為方式也會(huì)是積極的;思維方式與態(tài)度傾向如果是消極的,那么行為方式也會(huì)是消極的。比如學(xué)生A的行為就可能有不同的選擇:如果他認(rèn)為學(xué)習(xí)對(duì)自己非常重要,同時(shí)對(duì)學(xué)習(xí)和自己充滿了信心,就會(huì)表現(xiàn)出積極進(jìn)取的態(tài)度和堅(jiān)持不懈的努力;相反,如果認(rèn)為學(xué)習(xí)的意義無足輕重,同時(shí)對(duì)學(xué)習(xí)和自己又喪失了信心,產(chǎn)生了明顯的厭學(xué)態(tài)度,就會(huì)表現(xiàn)出退縮和放棄的行為傾向。在此過程中,遠(yuǎn)大目標(biāo)的引導(dǎo),堅(jiān)毅、頑強(qiáng)的性格特征,高度的自尊與自信,是影響行為選擇的重要因素。

在這一過程中,同化與順應(yīng)這兩種調(diào)節(jié)方式始終在發(fā)揮著作用。面對(duì)內(nèi)外環(huán)境的復(fù)雜性和行為效果的多重可能性,主體的判斷與選擇不可能一次性完成。所以適應(yīng)過程必然會(huì)表現(xiàn)為一個(gè)反復(fù)循環(huán)的動(dòng)態(tài)過程。一般規(guī)律是,經(jīng)過以上幾個(gè)環(huán)節(jié),如果所選擇的行為方式取得了令人滿意的結(jié)果,對(duì)適應(yīng)環(huán)境起到了積極的作用,就意味著同化與順應(yīng)的過程基本上實(shí)現(xiàn)了平衡,這一行為就會(huì)因受到正強(qiáng)化而鞏固下來,逐漸形成穩(wěn)定的態(tài)度傾向與行為習(xí)慣。這就是性格形成的過程。如果行為反應(yīng)的效果不理想,主體與環(huán)境之間仍然存在著不適應(yīng)的現(xiàn)象,說明同化與順應(yīng)之間并不平衡,這時(shí)就需要再次進(jìn)入上述的自我調(diào)節(jié)系統(tǒng)中進(jìn)行重新選擇。有時(shí)這種選擇需要經(jīng)歷若干次的重復(fù)循環(huán),才能取得理想效果,達(dá)到同化與順應(yīng)的平衡狀態(tài)。
